Reducing the Risk of Achilles Tendonitis

achilles tendonitisWhile you may not be able to prevent the Achilles tendonitis, there are some things you can do to help reduce the chances you will develop this extremely painful condition. If you have this problem, then you will need to employ these strategies to lower the risk of suffering a recurring episode.

Symptoms of Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles tendonitis occurs when the tissue that connects your calf muscles to your heel bone – the Achilles tendon – is overused. It usually affects runners, but it can also happen to anyone who is active.

The condition usually starts with a small amount of mild pain, either above the heel or in the back of the leg after playing sports or running. The pain then gets worse as your activity level increases, especially after sprinting, climbing stairs or running for an extended period of time. You may also have stiffness or tenderness.

Steps to Avoid Achilles Tendonitis

You can reduce your chances of developing Achilles tendonitis by following some simple steps. For example, if you are just starting a workout routine, increase the intensity and duration of your exercise regimen gradually. Try to avoid routines that place a great deal of stress on your Achilles tendon, such as running up hills.

Before you start any sort of strenuous workout, make sure you always take the time to properly warm up first. If you ever notice pain of any kind, do not try to fight through it – stop and rest for a little while.

It is also important that you stretch every day, paying special attention to your calf muscles and Achilles. Stretch both before and after your workout to help increase and maintain your flexibility. Also, be very careful when buying athletic shoes. They need to not only provide proper cushioning for your heels, they also need to provide firm support of your arches.
