How is Tendonitis Identified?

Tendonitis is a condition in which a tendon has become inflamed. Many people in the Rowlett, TX region suffer from tendonitis each year due to sports injuries or overworking specific tendons. The term tendonitis can be used to describe inflammation in any tendon within the body, but one of the most common places in which tendonitis is suffered is in the foot, or more specifically, the achilles tendon. In most cases of tendonitis, the following symptoms are found:

Tendon Pain

Ankle TendonitisFirst and foremost, pain in the affected tendon is the most common identifying trait of the condition. Pain may be felt at the moment of a specific injury to a tendon, but in cases of tendonitis, this pain will continue after the initial injury. Pain may be constant or it may become more severe if pressure is placed on the affected tendon. In addition, movement of the tendon or nearby muscles may cause pain as tendons are affected by other nearby muscle groups.

Limited Mobility

Because tendonitis can cause severe pain when pressure is applied, people suffering from this condition may have a hard time getting around. Tendonitis can also lead to weakness in the affected area, making it difficult for sufferers to walk without assistance. Some cases of tendonitis lead to stiffness in the affected area, further making it difficult to be mobile.

Swelling

People suffering from tendonitis may also experience swelling, redness, and heat at the site of the injury. This occurs because of the inflammation taking place beneath the skin. At times, itching may also be present.

See a Podiatrist

No matter the symptoms, seeing our podiatrist, Dr. Catherine Casteel, is highly advised after a suspected tendon injury. Only a trained medical professional should diagnose you with tendonitis and provide appropriate treatment.  Attempting to diagnose or treat tendonitis on your own can lead to further damage and more pain. Additionally, without a professional diagnosis, you may end up over or under treating your condition.
