Treating Morton’s Neuroma Without Surgery

Morton's neuroma Rowlett podiatristMorton’s neuroma (also referred to as intermetatarsal neuroma), is a condition characterized by thickening, inflammation or enlargement of the nerves located between the bones in your toes. It is typically found between the third and fourth toes, but it may also take place between the second and third.

Non-Surgical Options

It usually happens because the bones are pressing against the nerve. While you may need surgery to correct the problem, your Rowlett podiatrist will first consider non-surgical options. Here are a few of them.

Medications

Your podiatrist in Rowlett may recommend you take an anti-inflammatory drug such as aspirin or ibuprofen if your condition isn’t severe. In some instances, this medication may be injected into the skin. There is also a chance that you will be given a local anesthetic in order to relieve pain, but this is a temporary alternative.

Self-Treatment Options

It is possible, that your doctor may simply recommend that you change your footwear if your Morton’s neuroma isn’t particularly serious. You should wear shoes that properly support your feet, for example, that have a wide toe box. Shoes that have sturdy insoles as well as shock-absorbent soles may also be recommended. There are several types of shoe pads you can purchase over the counter that will help relieve pressure as well.

In addition, your doctor may recommend that you apply an ice pack to the area periodically to relieve pain and reduce swelling, and that you also rest your feet often and massage the area causing pain.

If Surgery is Needed

There are, however, instances where neither medication nor other treatment alternatives will work. If surgery is your best option you may undergo a neurectomy, which includes partial removal of nerve tissue. You may experience numbness or tingling after the surgery if a type of scar tissue known as a “stump neuroma” forms. There may also be a minimally invasive option that will be able to effectively treat your condition.
